Domestic air travel to become costly in India

Looks like the ever-rising fuel prices is going to take its toll on the ever-growing Indian aviation market! The times of cheap air travel in the domestic market might soon become history as the airline companies are trying to recover from the high cost of aviation fuel.

Jet Airways has already announced that it would levy a fuel surcharge of Rs 300 on all domestic fares from May 1. Other players in the market including the budget airline company Air Deccan has also hinted about similar plans for the future.

Jet Airways on their part would be applying this surcharge on both business and economy tickets. The company said in a statement: “The fuel surcharge, which has been necessitated by the continued escalation in prices of aviation turbine fuel, will be levied on all tickets purchased within India and abroad whether they are issued against the rupee or dollar tariff.”

Kingfisher Airlines is another airline company, which has hinted about a possible price hike. Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, Kingfisher Airlines, Mr. Vijay Mallya said in a statement: “The cost of fuel is going up. We have not yet taken a decision on what we should do. But all airlines pass on the increase to passengers.”
