India is looking for a symbol to represent Rs.

Indian finance ministry has launched a competition seeking a symbol to represent the country’s official currency Rupee.

It is currently represented by Rs. or INR instead of a symbol like we have $ for Dollar and £ for Pound and € for Euro.

The Finance Ministry of India said that the symbol would become the “identity of the Indian currency”.

The contest would end in April this year and is open to resident Indians.

Ministry representative spoke about the contest: “The symbol should represent the historical and cultural ethos of India. The entries can be in any of the Indian languages. They can even be in English which is also an accepted language of use by the government.”

Sad facts about this contest:

Each entry would be required a fee of 500 rupees.
The symbol needs to be applicable to the standard computer keyboard!

The winner would get a prize money of Rs. 250,000. The government would also award a prize of 25,000 rupees to five other shortlisted entries.
