New York Times to remove sections to cut costs
New York Times is planning to eliminate several weekly sections in addition to cutting freelance spending to save millions of dollars in annual costs.
The newspaper said in a statement: “Taken together, these moves will save millions of dollars — savings that would otherwise have to come out of payroll.”
They are also seeking concessions from unionized employees.
They have already hinted that they could close down money-losing Boston Globe if it does not start cutting costs in their operations.
New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller added: “As I have said on past occasions, there is nothing sacrosanct about the current size of the newsroom, but if the day comes when we decide to undertake a cut in the staff, it should be driven not by the temporary crisis of a recession, but by a careful calculation of our long-term priorities.”
