Maruti 800 might survive the new pollution norms after all
Maruti Suzuki India has revealed that they are working on upgrading the engine that is powering their Maruti 800 car.
The aim is to make it compliant with the emission requirements that will take effect in April 2010.
Maruti had previously hinted that they might discontinue the model from sale in the metro cities next year. The new pollution norms are levied first in the metro cities.
Maruti spoke about the new developments: “We have the engineering capabilities to upgrade the engines of Maruti 800, so that it could meet the emission norms and we are working on it.”
The problem for Maruti is the recently launched Tata Nano model. Tata Nano has become the cheapest car in the Indian market. It is considerably cheaper than Maruti 800.
It would become a major problem for the company if Tata starts dominating the segment of market which is currently dominated by M800.
The next cheapest model from the company is Alto which is much more expensive when compared to Tata Nano.
