Google thought of acquiring a newspaper company!
Google chairman and chief executive officer Eric Schmidt has admitted that the company considered acquiring a newspaper company but dropped the idea at a later stage.
He said that they thought about using its charitable arm, Google.org to support news businesses.
However, the company is unlikely to take this route now.
Google dropped the idea because the deal could have turned into an expensive liability on their core expertise.
The company however continues to work with newspaper companies to help them grow on the web.
Schmidt further said that news content online is likely to remain accessible for free in most cases. Subscription based models have failed to generate much revenues for most newspaper companies.
