NPD Group: Digital media sales all set to match CD sales in USA
Digital media downloads are becoming so popular that they are all set to catch-up with the sales of audio CDs in the US market.
NPD Group has reported that the two can account for equal sales by the end of the next year.
Audio CDs currently account for around 65 percent of US music sales.
NPD representative Russ Crupnick admitted: “Many people are surprised that the CD is still the dominant music delivery format, given the attention to digital music and the shrinking retail footprint for physical products. But with digital music sales growing at 15 to 20 percent, and CDs falling by an equal proportion, digital music sales will nearly equal CD sales by the end of 2010.”
The report from the research group added that Apple iTunes on its own accounts for around 25 percent of all music sales in the US market. This number is pretty phenomenal.
