General Motors to cut jobs in UK
World’s largest maker of automobiles General Motors has said that they are planning to cut as many as 900 jobs at its plant in northwest England to boost productivity.
This news is just the latest one to come as a blow to the already messed up UK automobile industry. GM has said that they would be axing one of three shifts at its Ellesmere Port plant. This would result in a job loss for as many as 900 workers.
The company is facing declining sales of the Astra model manufactured here and sees no logic in running three shifts at this plant. GM Europe President Carl-Peter Forster said on this new development: “Our industry simply cannot afford to stop continually improving productivity in its Western European car plants.”
This news comes just a month after Peugeot Citroen announced similar plans to close its central England plant, eliminating 2,300 jobs.
