Volkswagen might face worker backlash, as they demand more work without pay

Volkswagen is planning to raise the working hours for their employees to 35 hours per week from 28.8 hours. But this they want without offering any rise in the pays for their workers. The company added that it is becoming difficult for them to maintain employment of 100,000 workers at its west German plants.

This is one of the many ways VW is aiming to increase the efficiency at their plants as they just recently began talking with the worker’s union.

The company claims that if they fail to improve efficiency at their manufacturing plants, they risk the possibility of cutting as many as 20,000 jobs.

The trade union IG Metall has on the other hand renewed its demands that Volkswagen present a detailed restructuring plan for their VW brand, which is facing troubles to stay competitive.

IG Metall regional boss Hartmut Meine said in a statement recently: “Volkswagen has to lay its cards on the table. We want to know how Volkswagen aims to restructure its core Volkswagen brand and what concrete demands will be placed on IG Metall.”
