Chidambaram clarifies modernization of airports project
The entire process of giving out airport modernization projects to the winners of the bids has been quite controversial. Now, the Union Finance Minister of India, Chidambaram have clarified some of the doubts in the mind of people through a statement issued in the public.
He has clearly said that the Delhi and Mumbai airports are only being modernized with the participation of the private consortia. This does not mean that the airports are being privatized or being given into private hands for management.
Chidambaram said in a statement: “It is not privatization, but modernization of airports. A decision to this effect was arrived at the UPA co-ordination committee meeting in consultation with the Left parties.β
He further added that the airports would remain government-owned properties and the license awarded to the private consortia would last only for a period of 30 years. He further added: ββThe decision to hand over modernization works to the private parties is final and it has been taken in the interest of the nation.β
