Hewlett-Packard to separate their portable devices segment

US based technology giants Hewlett-Packard has confirmed that they are now aiming at separating their handheld device business into a stand-alone entity. The aim is to improve their efforts on their ever-growing market of portable devices, which are high in demand in the market.

HP now plans to separate this unit from their existing notebook computer operations. The aim is to increase revenues from the division making PDAs, which are capable of making phone calls, check electronic mail, among other functions.

The company claims that the market for such devices is growing by almost 60% and they want to become a large player in this segment. HP also announced that they are appointing David Rothschild, a former executive at rival Sun Microsystems to lead this division.

With this separation, the personal systems group at HP would consist of four main product business units: notebook computing, desktops, workstations, and handhelds.
