Apollo Tyres to start importing radial tyres instead of manufacturing them locally

Apollo Tyres is the nation’s largest tyre maker by volumes and they have now said that they plan to import radial tyres for luxury cars from their manufacturing facilities located in South Africa.

This means that the company can stop production of such tyres from its manufacturing facility in India in the next couple of months.

Sunam Sarkar, chief – strategy and business operations, Apollo Tyres spoke on these new plans: “We are evaluating the possibility of stopping the production of radial tyres [for luxury cars] from our plant in India and import them from South Africa to meet local demand. This is because; the radial tyre market for luxury cars in India is only about 600 tyres a month, which is quite low. Apollo currently manufactures 200 radial tyres a month.”

Apollo is also considering stopping the production of cross-ply truck tyres at their South African manufacturing plant. The demand in other markets for these tyres would be met through their plants located in India.
