Palm Inc. to pay Xerox to settle patent infringement suit
Palm Inc. has said that they would be paying Xerox around $22.5 million to settle a patent infringement lawsuit dating back to 1997.
The lawsuit was filed by Xerox against a predecessor company to Palm Inc. Xerox claimed that the handwriting-recognition technology sold as “Graffiti” used by some Palm devices infringed on a Xerox patent known as the Unistrokes patent.
The payment would cover the payments for a fully paid-up license for three Xerox patents. The two companies also said that they are agreeing on a seven-year mutual covenant not to sue within mutually agreed fields of use.
Xerox on their part added that the money received from this settlement would be mostly offset by costs related to the settlement of other legal matters.
