General Motors to spend on upgrading plants in Michigan

World’s largest automaker General Motors has confirmed that they are making significant investment to upgrade five Michigan assembly and component plants. These investments are in the tune of around $545 million.

This news comes in just as the company is continuing with their massive restructuring plans of cutting jobs and closing down loss making production units. GM would be investing in two sites in Pontiac and plants in Ypsilanti, Romulus, and Lansing.

GM has said that they would be investing around $163 million to retool its truck assembly plant in Pontiac where GM will build redesigned full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. In addition, they would be investing $138 million in its Lansing Grand River assembly plant along with another $152 million in a transmission plant in Ypsilanti.

Also planned are investments of $60 million in its Romulus engine facility and $32 million in its metal stamping plant in Pontiac. GM also plans to hire around 280 people at the Pontiac truck assembly plant.
