Intel to invest big in Clearwire Corp.
World’s largest maker of microprocessors for personal computers Intel has announced their plans to invest big in the wireless Internet services company Clearwire Corp.
Intel said that they are investing $600 million in Clearwire as they aim to establish WiMax as the next generation standard for wireless broadband connectivity throughout the world.
This investment would be made through their subsidiary Intel Capital and would be the biggest yet for this unit.
The deal with Clearwire also would see Motorola and other investors to provide a further $300 million funding to Clearwire.
Clearwire is a good target for investments for Intel as they are already providing wireless Internet services in 200 cities in the United States.
Intel is now planning to bring WiMax capabilities to select versions of their Centrino packages for portable computers. This should further expand the availability of devices around supporting this new standard for wireless internet connectivity.
