Ford Canada to assemble hybrid cars

US based automobile giants Ford has announced that they would soon start assembling hybrid cars in their Canada division. With this, the company would become the first automaker to do so in this country.

Hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity in North America as rising fuel prices has led to consumer’s interest growing in alternate mode of powering their vehicles. Toyota has been one of the major beneficiaries of this ideology shift and Ford plans to have their share of the pie too.

The company would be assembling hybrid versions of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicles in a plant in Oakville, Ontario. The aim is to get the cars out in the retail market by next year with generating big numbers by the year 2010. The company also has plans to shift half of their production to hybrids by the end of the decade.

Ford is spending as much as $860 million on upgrading this plant to get ready to assemble hybrid vehicles.
