Global sales of microchips rising impressively
The growing demand for electronic products around the world means that the global sales of microchips are growing fast as well. In fact, the sales of chips in the year 2005 rose 6.8 percent to a record $228 billion.
Most of this demand was driven by the rising sales of computers, mobile phones, digital music players and other consumer devices. The month of December alone recorded impressive sales of just under $20 billion. This was an improvement of more than 8% compared to sales in December 2004.
These figures were revealed in a report released by the Semiconductor Industry Association. SIA President George Scalise said in a statement: “Despite record energy prices and an unprecedented series of natural disasters, worldwide demand for semiconductors increased in all end markets”.
The association took into consideration sales of all kind of chips, which are now finding a place in all kind of consumer electronic items including household products like the microwaves and refrigerators. However, computers and gadgets are the primary market for these kinds of microprocessors.
