eBay traffic was affected massively by the Fifa World Cup
World’s largest web auction company eBay has revealed that they suffered falling online traffic during the recently concluded Fifa World Cup.
The company said in a statement that as soon as a match started, they noticed a dramatic fall in the traffic on their websites.
The traffic became normal again after the matches ended. This was revealed by Chief Executive Meg Whitman during a conference call held to discuss the Silicon Valley company’s quarterly results.
However, the company has still managed to meet Wall Street financial expectations. Whitman said: “The first ball (that) was kicked, site activity declined; it stayed low through the whole game and then popped right back up again and we saw this time after time again. I wouldn’t say it was a huge factor in our Q2 (second quarter) results, but it was just remarkable. When the World Cup game started, you could actually see the site activity decline pretty dramatically.”
The company reported that second-quarter revenue grew 30 percent to $1.41 billion. The number of registered users on the service is now at more than 203 million.
