Amazon.com plans to enter Apple territory
Amazon.com might be currently known as one of the hottest ecommerce network on the internet. However, the company has bigger plans and wants to enter the digital music player and service market currently dominated by Macintosh maker Apple Computers.
Amazon.com is expected to unveil a music service and music players, which would put them in direct competition with Apple and several other companies. The company is talking with major music companies including Sony and Universal for content related contracts.
The company has not revealed much about this new initiative but it has been pretty clear in the last couple of months that they are very much interested in becoming more than just an online retailing store. Amazon.com also runs a search engine service A9 in partnership with Google and owns Alexa.com.
Amazon.com is also rumored to have hired a significant number of software engineers specifically tasked with creating music-download technology. This online service can come online as soon as next month and it would be interesting to see how they use their brand value to provide competition to Apple iPod and Apple iTunes.
